Ninety-nine: Picture This

Picture This, directed by George Hickenlooper, is a documentary about the shooting of The Last Pictures Show and, later, Texasville the sequel.

The shooting of The Last Picture Show was as dramatic as it’s subject matter and George Hickenlooper has attempted to capture the feelings of the people involved in Picture This.

What I liked: The story of The Last Picture Show, Peter Bogdanovich‘s downward career trajectory, and the reunion of all in Texasville is an interesting tale and is excellent fodder for a documentary. Cybil Shepherd is candid in her interview, as are all the interviewees. Timothy Bottoms was the most piercing in his take on the shooting of The Last Picture Show and his feelings towards Bogdanovich, Shepherd, Ben Johnson, and the shooting of the film.

The views of the towns people was a welcome addition to what could have been the typical featurette.

What I didn’t like: Too much reliance on interviews and very little archival footage of the film. That’s not the fault of the filmmaker but it did detract from my experience. I know a little about this sorid tale and I didn’t find it particularly well served in this movie. I think this would be a good entry point for the uninitiated but little else.
